This is one of the most painful books I have read. Period. This is the true story of Deo, (Deogratius) born in Burundi. He escapes pogroms of the Hutu-Tsutsi wars in Burundi by fleeing to adjacent Rwanda. The genocide continues there and he flees back. Through a friend, he gets to America, to face many hardships. There is far more about his medical studies (both in Burundi and the USA), legal immigration issues, history and somewhat current status of the two groups in both countries. For some reason this particular book reached me as many books about various wars and genocides have not. The author portrays Deo's psychological mannerisms and uniquely cultural coping strategies. There is minimal graphic violence. More evocative are the descriptions of the war memorials in both countries. We are left wondering, along with many others, how soon these wars may start again. We are equally left hopeful that medical clinics, like the one Deo spearheaded and built, will spread and help bring peace between the two groups.
