How do I use the notes and highlights feature in Bookshare Reader on the website?

New Features! You can now add a note to a book while you read and highlight text in one of four colors to make important parts stand out.

  • A note lets you type a comment and attach it to a specific spot in the book, like writing in the margin. Notes can help readers insert a thought or answer a question about what they are reading.
  • A highlight puts a band of color behind text you choose. It works like using a colored marker on a paper book. Use highlights to make important parts stand out.
  • Notes and highlights are saved under the Book Navigation tab along side the Table of Contents for when you want to refer back to them. You can read, change, or delete a note and remove highlights when you no longer need them.

Notes

There are two ways to add notes:

  • While reading, select the Note button (pencil icon) in the footer of the reader; or
  • Highlight a section of text and select the Note button (pencil icon) in the footer of the reader

Both actions will prompt the “Add Note” pop up box to open

To add a note:

  1. Type your note in the box. You can also pick a color for the note using the four color circles (orange, green, yellow, blue) near the bottom left.
  2. Select the Save button to keep your note. Select Cancel to close without saving.

If your note is tied to a highlight, a note icon appears next to that section. If it isn’t, the note icon appears at the top of the page

To edit/delete a note:

Open a note by selecting the note icon within the text, or open it from the Bookmarks & Notes list found under the Book Navigation tab.

  • To edit: change the text in the typing area, then select Save.
  • To delete: select the Delete button. This removes the note for good.

Highlights

To add a highlight

  1. Select the text you want to highlight. On a computer, click and drag across words. If you use a keyboard or screen reader, use your normal text-selection keys.
  2. A menu appears above your selection with four color options and a Note button. Select a color to apply the highlight. Screen reader tip: the four choices are announced as color options, followed by the Note option.
  3. To remove a highlight, select the highlighted text, then select delete in the Add Note box, then confirm.

Finding your notes, highlights, and bookmarks

  1. Select the Book navigation button (the list icon).
  2. Select the Bookmarks & Notes tab.
  3. Your saved items appear in a list, in the order they appear in the book.
  4. You can filter your Bookmarks & Notes by All, Bookmarks, Notes, or Highlights.
  5. Select any item to jump to that spot in the book, or use its edit or delete option.

For screen reader users
