All Bookshare users get access to Nora — a high-quality, always-free natural voice. Bookshare Plus subscribers unlock four additional premium Natural Voices, each tuned for a different reading style. Students preview voices and save favorites, all inside the Bookshare Reader app they already use. Natural Voices require an internet connection. Offline reading uses standard device voices.

Frequently asked questions
Do students need a Bookshare Plus subscription to use Natural Voices?
Not entirely. Nora — a friendly, all-purpose natural voice — is always free for all Bookshare users with no subscription required. The four additional Natural Voices (Milo, Cleo, Sage, and Ami) are part of the Bookshare Plus subscription. During the current beta period these voices are available as a free preview while we gather feedback and refine the experience. A Bookshare Plus subscription will be required to continue using them once the preview period ends.
Where are Natural Voices available right now?
Natural Voices are currently available on the Bookshare Reader mobile app for iOS and Android. Web browser support is in development and expected to launch fall 2026. An internet connection is required — Natural Voices are not available offline.
What happens if a student loses their internet connection while using a Natural Voice?
Natural Voices require an active internet connection. If a student loses connectivity mid-session, the reader will fall back to a standard device voice automatically. Their voice preference is saved and will resume the next time they are online.
Do Natural Voices work with remediated documents from Bookshare Plus?
Yes. Natural Voices work across both the Bookshare library and documents remediated through Bookshare Plus — students get the same voice experience regardless of where the content came from.
Can administrators control which voices students have access to?
Voice selection is currently managed at the student level inside the Bookshare Reader app. If this is a requirement for your institution, mention it when you speak with our team.
Are more Natural Voices planned?
Yes. We are actively refining the current voices based on beta feedback and plan to expand the selection over time.
