The continuing love story of a Yorkshire vet and his friends and neighbors, both human and animal.
From the book jacket: "I'm right sorry to see her go," said Farmer Dakin to James Herriot, his vet. "She's stood in that stall for twelve years and given me thousands of gallons of milk." But Blossom the Cow was too old now for milking, and the farmer needed to make room for a younger animal. So, sadly, he was sending Blossom to market. At least, that's what he and the vet thought. But James Herriot continued on his rounds to Mrs. Pickering and her Basset hounds, he was about to find that Blossom had a surprise in store....
from the book jacket: After a series of bestselling books for adults that have established him as perhaps the world's most beloved storyteller, country vet James Herriot has won the hearts of younger readers as well, with his illustrated stories for children, Moses the Kitten, Only One Woof, and The Christmas Day Kitten. (Grownups like them too. The San Diego Union wrote of The Christmas Day Kitten, "The sweet story is told with warmth, humor and tenderness that evokes smiles and tears. Ruth Brown's lively and colorful illustrations are a perfect complement to the narrative, matching Herriot's skill as a superb storyteller.") In Bonny's Big Day, Herriot and Brown have teamed up to tell the unforgettable and endearing story of farmer John Skipton and his old carthorse Bonny. Though the mare has been "retired" from farm work for years, Farmer Skipton visits her every day. When Herriot suggests that Bonny be entered in the Darrowby Fair Pet Show, Farmer Skipton is shocked at first. But when the Fair arrives, the surprise will be on everyone else. Once again, James Herriot has fashioned another captivating story about the bond between people (even gruff old farmers) and their animals. With Ruth Brown's illustrations capturing the rugged beauty of the Yorkshire Dales and the colorfül sitè of a country fair, Bonny's Big Day is another treat for the new generation of Herriot fans. Publisher's Weekly: The noted veterinarian and storyteller recalls a Christmas morning when he was summoned to the home of Mrs. Pickering. Usually he called on her Basset hounds, but this time the woman's concern was for a mother cat that was sick. The cat, a stray that occasionally hung around at Mrs. Pickering's, had brought her kitten with her and then died. Mrs. Pickering keeps the kitten, which grows up to become a "retriever-cat" fetching balls and setting them at his mistress's feet. It portrays a holiday spirit usually associated with the past: that the humblest of pleasures are the ones most keenly felt. ( Although the designated reading level is 4-7, folks of all ages will enjoy this beautifully told story. This file should make an excellent embossed braille copy.

A children's story about a special, orphaned kitten named Moses, which is written by the same author who wrote All Creatures Great and Small. There are plenty of cats on the farm, but this is James' story of Moses.
From the Book Jacket: James Herriot is without a doubt one of the world's best-known vets and best-loved authors. His books have captivated legions of adult readers and are now classics. With Moses the Kitten, he won over many young readers as well. Now Herriot turns his delightful narrative voice to another story for children. Only One Woof is the story of a sweet but silent sheepdog named Gyp. Raised on a country farm, Gyp is content to cheerfully accompany his master on his rounds of chores and to frolic with the other animals, never once uttering one sound. When Gyp attends the sheepdog championship trials and sees his brother Sweep for the first time since they were separated as pups, his uncharacteristic response pleases and surprises all. Color illustrations by Peter Barrett (acclaimed illustrator of Moses the Kitten) make enchanting and vivid accompaniment to this charming tale. Herriot once again captures the joy and wonder of life as only a master of writing can do.
