- Synopsis
- Melita's late husband of happy memory and dubious occupation has left her generously supplied with money, jewels, and a mink coat. He's also left her his skeleton keys, a revolver, and an irrepressible curiosity. When Melita arrives at the extremely genteel Devereux Hotel, a seaside home for retirees, she meets her fellow guests: Colonel Wicksteed, Mr. Dawlish, Lady Ridgleigh, Mrs. Selsby, and the others. And there's Miss Naismith, who runs the hotel with a firm hand. She insists that all her guests be financially prosperous, in good health, and "a nice class of person." But is Melita quite the class that Miss Naismith demands? Miss Naismith has her doubts, especially when one of the guests dies a suspicious death the night after Melita's arrival. Life--and death--had been so peaceful at the Devereux until Melita appeared on the scene. Sadly, Melita's arrival acts as a catalyst for disaster. Outwardly cheerful and confident, but quietly disturbed by what she observes, Melita decides to investigate. She hears strange sounds in the night, and she suspects that nothing at the Devereux is quite what it seems to be.
