I am an under graduate student at a small college and I know for certain that I want to enter the medical field and make medicine my life. This book is a wonderful account of one doctor's experiences which has made me think about medicine for what it truly is. Comming from a family of Doctors I have grown up around medicine, but this book made me see that despite what I'd like to think physicians are by no means infallible. This book is an extremely realistic portrail of the medical field as it actually is and it has been a true inspiration to me. It has made me more certain than ever that I want to make medicine my life and has forced me to think about many difficult issues such as when physicians should step in and help patients decide what truly is the best treatment plan for their illness. Complications has also dispelled my idea that doctors are perfict and has helped me to realize that they are human beings just like the rest of us. It has made me even more certain of my aim in life and has showed me what medicine is all about. I know that after reading this book I have changed some of my views, and I am sure that when my own time comes to practice medicine I will take the lessons I have learned from Atul Gwande with me. ,
