- Synopsis
- FADE OUT signals the arrival of a brilliant new satirist on the American literary scene. It is a delightfully comic, bizarre panorama of American foibles, chronicling the experiences of its 74 year-old-hero as he struggles for a life of dignity in a world which treats old age like a dangerous disease. Retired from a Baltimore bank after 50 years, Dick Twombly lives with his daughter in the suburbs, a useless castoff in the family's cheerless fold. Kate, his daughter, treats him like a doddering infant; Gloria, his pimply granddaughter persecutes him with sheer maliciousness. The town suspects him of an indecent fondness for little girls, and his family finally packs him off to an old-age home. Twombly's decision to make his get-away from the asylum touches off one of the most hilarious series of madcap adventures in recent fiction -- an insane air-raid evacuation drill, a wild hitch-hike across the U.S. in a variety of improbable vehicles, a narrow escape from the police during a forest fire in New Mexico. Twombly's odyssey ends when he, the castoff, finds a new home and a new life in the abandoned hotel of an Arizona ghost town.
