- Synopsis
-
HARRY WALTZ is a loan shark, the richest man in the fictional Michigan town of Marathon. The people of Marathon look up to Harry Waltz, but mostly because he lives on a hill that overlooks the town.
Still, Waltz is a loan shark with a difference. People pay him back not because he ever muscles them, but in order to protect their good names. As Harry says at one point in Charles Dickinson's fine first novel, ''Waltz in Marathon'': ''I was able to talk people into believing there was nothing wrong with them taking my money. That is the source of my fortune. I brought honor and gentlemanliness . . . and seemliness to loan sharking.''
