Lyddie was a young teenager who was caught in the early 1830's. She was in the northeast living with her younger brother charlie, and two younger sisters-- Agnes and Rachel. They live with their crazy mom. After a "bear" incedent, her family seperates and her and charlie are forced to work at different places. Lyddie survives working all different places with the little money she makes. Her whole family falls apart when Agnes dies, and momma gets sick. When at the end, Lyddie finally feels what needs is best, and the book becomes a happy ending.
