- Synopsis
- Brahmarakshas is a god-demon. He is an ascetic and a sad loner in a world of utter insensitivity, a world wrapped up in values, rites and rituals. This contrary position is what makes the eponymous hero a god-demon. He gives up worldly life to become an ascetic, but the world does not let him live alone. The world, in the shape of the colonialist king, transgresses into his world of self-exile and destroys his abode, peace, abnegation, sanyas and distance from the political and economic society. If the statement of the god-demon is taken as the final statement of the play, then it is about abnegation and resignation from the worldly matters. If the play is taken as a metaphor of human life, it begins with juvenile excesses, passes on to youth, moves to the intrigues and complexities of adult life, and ends with withdrawal and sanyasa and vanaprastha.
