- Synopsis
- This account of the history of San Francisco Zen Center is based on the author's extensive interviews with dozens of men and women who were involved with the center over a period of some thirty years. Founded in the late 1960s by the charismatic Japanese monk Suzuki-Roshi, the San Francisco Zen Center brought the practice of Zen Buddhism to the United States for the first time. As his successor Suzuki-Roshi chose his protege Richard Baker. Downing traces the trajectory of Baker's rise to power, his misuse of money and privilege, and the series of events which brought his abuses into the open. The testimonies of numerous people who lived through Baker's reign show how the group inadvertently supported Baker's excesses through a process of denial and misplaced loyalty.
