I actualy own this book, a lovely little antique in red binding, with a miniature portrait glued to the front, if ever you wondered what Maude looked like.
The plot is simple: a young widow marries unhappily, causing pain to her young child. The story, though, is far more complex. Just wait till you see the way these characters' histories really connect!
Charmingly written in the mode of the day, with picturesque descriptions of the countryside and of life during those simpler times. The lives of the characters are deliciously intertwined, in keeping with books from the great Bronte sisters.
I highly recommend this book for a light afternoon of reading. But be sure to have some tea at hand. Perhaps a nice Earl Grey.
