- Synopsis
- This collection of essays explores the relationship between intimacy and commodification. Boris (feminist studies, U. of California, Santa Barbara)and Parreñas (sociology, U. of Southern California) present essays examining the ways in which our society has become so intertwined with capitalism that even our personal relationships heavily use commoditized intimacy. Since the Victorian era we have relied on services like hostessing, elderly care, domestic work, and sex to provide an intimate level of care that used to be provided by family and friends, and this collection explores the societal ramifications of such reliance.
