Growing up, Rebecca Berlin and her sisters loved to hear their grandmother, Gemma, tell and retell her version of Briar Rose (The Sleeping Beauty of the Wood). After Gemma's death years later, the family finds a box of photos and papers they'd never seen, and Becca, now a young woman, decides to find her grandmother's past. The search takes her ultimately to Poland, where she learns about the horrific things that happened during WW II to Jews, Gypsies, Jehova's Witnesses and homosexuals in Sachenhausen and about the extermination of hundreds of thousands of Jews in Chelmno.
