This book is a neat compilation of stories about the great and wise judge, Ooka. In some of the stories he is indeed very wise and in some of the stories he is allowed to look foolish, especially by his wife.
The Japanese believe very strongly in not humiliating a child which I find refreshing compared to American culture.
In "The Case of teh Marble Monster" Ooka's grandson and two little friends are bragging about their grandfathers and the wonderful things they can do. Ooka's grandson brags that his grandfather can bring the marble monster statue to life.
Ooka tries to get out of it but realizes that these three little boys are counting on him. He then asks them if they have said good bye to everyone. They are puzzled by this. He then cautions them that the monster has been on the pedestal for many years and has not eaten. When it comes to life it will be very hungry and will eat whatever is near it.
The three boys look up at the marble monster and conclude that they know he can bring the monster to life but it is not necessary to do so.
I really think the solution is fitting for the story.
Donald Hallock (grandfather)
