- Synopsis
- Who was Billy Blake, other than a homeless alcoholic who wandered the streets? Why was he found dead from starvation in one of the richest neighborhoods of one of the richest cities in the world? And why did he die in the garage of Amanda Powell, a woman whose merchant banker husband had absconded abroad five years earlier with a vast sum of money? Amanda Powell herself is something of an enigma. Having evaded the media when Billy Blake's body was first discovered in her garage, she is suddenly willing to discuss what little she knows of the man's sad life when journalist Michael Deacon does a story on homelessness. Beneath Amanda's cool facade is a strange obsession to know more about her dead visitor, and Deacon's curiositty ut both her and her motives in trying to establish Billy's true identity-is intense. While Amanda defends her position as appropriate in the face of moral injustice, Deacon is cynical. His interest in Billy Blake has more to do with forgotten echoes from his ) own past than with the moralistic stance taken by Amanda Powell, a woman whose wealth can be explained only if her husband is dead.
