- Synopsis
- Reuben Snake dictated his autobiography to Jay Fikes, who wrote about Snake in the Introduction and Foreword to this book. The autobiography is in Snake's own words, written directly from the tapes without editing; there is a some repetition of ideas. Snake was an "activist, educator, and political and spiritual leader,...a potent force for political change, preservation of cultural traditions and justice for all indigenous peoples." (from the cover flap). The book relates the ups and downs of Snake trying to grow up and become a man and make a living in the 1940's and '50's. Then as he matures and find himself and becomes a leader, the book describes in an interesting and personal manner the political and sociological and freedom-of-religion problems the Indians faced in latter half of the 20th century, as well as the Indians' spirituality and the philosophy of family. Main text has been read and spell-checked. Nothing was done to bibliography or vocabulary except eliminating end-of-line breaks., and nothing was done to the index, which is readable.
