- Synopsis
- These stories run the gambit from the recent past to the far future, from Earth to distant planets, from the personal to the galactic, from hard sf to soft, and from touching to terrifying. There is adventure, romance, faith, high spirits and low spirits, courage and listless acceptance of the unacceptable. Every story is a page turner, exciting to read and full of ideas to ponder. The writing is rich in detail and intensity. The reader is entertained and invited to examine the big ideas among which are the protective instincts of mothers, the potential of intelligent machines left without human direction, the sacrifices of workers, the power of faith in action, the motivation of man to explore other worlds and the positive difference one person of integrity and courage can make. These are the stories that took firm hold of reader's imaginations and influenced the beliefs of the mid twentieth century. Miller is first and foremost a talented writer, the author of the classic, A Canticle for Liebowitz. The fact that most of his writing concerns itself with science fiction is only secondary. The scope and depth of his interests are demonstrated in THE VIEW FROM THE STARS, in which he travels all the way from puckish humor to horror, to robotics, to the grand, sonorous, cataclysmic exploration of the stars by that weakling homo sapiens.
