- Synopsis
- When Leslie Whitney sees her fisherman husband off for the summer, she expects to spend the days of his absence happily and quietly. She will take leisurely walks about their island home, work on charitable projects with the other women of her sewing circle, and devote time to her home and her friends. But she does not reckon with the harsh breath of scandal, nor with the self-righteous, idle women who have leisure to gossip and embroider half-remembered secrets of the past. Despite Leslie's wishes to remain aloof, she finds herself gradually drawn into a sudden turmoil, when a former islander returns. Fighting to keep intact some small part of the quiet summer she planned, she is thwarted by her own natural warmth and compassion until, quite unwillingly, she herself becomes the very center of controversy.
