- Synopsis
- The Soviet's most valuable ship -- a new ballistic-missile submarine with their most trusted and skilled naval officer at the helm -- is attempting to defect to the United States. It is high treason on an unprecedented scale, and the Soviet's mission is to seek and destroy her at any cost. If the U.S. fleet can locate the Red October and get her safely to port, it will be the intelligence coup of all time. Red October is perhaps the most realistic fictitious book I have ever read. Most of the story takes place aboard a nuclear submarine, Red October, whose captain decides to defect against the Sovient Union. The detail in this book is excellent - from the description of propulsion systems to the actions of each character. Clancy takes a lot of time and pride to develop each character's personality, and while most characters do have a static personality, quite a few do end up being dynamic. If you are looking for a bit of technical background on nuclear submarines, I recommend this book without hesitation.
