- Synopsis
- John Sevier, leading the cause of Secession, already had sent to the Spanish Governor letters of agreement and consent to the emigration of the American frontiersmen to Louisiana. A vital letter, now being carried to New Orleans, arranged for passports and set all in motion. If it could be seized from the Spanish courier, Don d'Alcacer Salcedo, the negotiation would be held up, until another letter could be written and delivered. Tenasee Hazard had been assigned the task of overtaking Salcedo to cut the line of treasonable correspondence. If he succeeded, enough time would be gained so that the Constitution of the United States could be ratified and the whole conspiracy would fall to nothing. But Salcedo had outdistanced him, and the race had narrowed fatally. Time, a little more time, was all Hazard needed.
