The Curve of Time: a Classic Memoir of a Woman and Her Children Who Explored the Coastal Waters of the Pacific Northwest
By:
- Synopsis
- From the book: HIS IS NEITHER A STORY NOR A LOG; IT IS JUST AN ACCOUNT OF MANY LONG SUNNY SUMMER months, during many years, when the children were young enough and old enough to take on camping holidays up the coast of British Columbia. Time did not exist; or if it did it did not matter, and perhaps it was not always sunny. Our world then was both wide and narrow - wide in the immensity of sea and mountain; narrow in that the boat was very small, and we lived and camped, explored and swam in a little realm of our own making. At times we longed for a larger boat; for each summer, as the children grew bigger, the boat seemed to grow smaller, and it became a problem how to fit everyone in. She was only twenty-five feet long, with a beam of six and a half feet, and until later, when the two oldest girls went East to school, she had to hold six human beings and sometimes a dog as well.

I have read "The Curve of Time" five times. It is a delightful account of the summer travels of a mother and her children, told in a conversational style, by a wonderful storyteller -- Wylie Blanchet. They were an incredibly brave crew, and their adventures were both riveting and admirable. The childrens' safety was totally in the hands of their mother, who navigated treacherous waters and conditions with only their small power boat and charts. We bought the book in Canada during a cruise my husband, our young son and I took to Desolation Sound in the early 1980s, and we read it aloud in the evenings while at anchor. We loved it then, and each time I've read it since I'm reminded of the beautiful places we saw in British Columbia, and I'm also reminded how much I love Wylie! She was an amazing woman, and I'm sure her children grew up to be outstanding, vibrant, adventurous people, like their mother. Our son is grown, and is a writer. After he finished college he asked us for copies of the special books he read in his childhood, for his personal library. "The Curve of Time" was one of those books. I recommend it to everyone.
