- Synopsis
- How would we treat our cousin, Neanderthal man, if he were alive today? In this alternate history, bands of Homo erectus had crossed the Siberian land bridges to America, but no modern humans made the same trip later. The world where sims (the European settlers' name for Homo erectus) rather than Indians live is different from ours. North America would have been easier for Europeans to settle than it was in our history, where the Indians were strong enough to slow if not to stop the expansion. The presence of sims--intelligent beings, but different from and less than us-- shaped European thought.

Neanderthal man, known in this alternate history as Sims, never became extinct in north america. In a series of novelettes, Harry Turtledove explores the fascinating social consequences.
We get to see the sims used as slaves (far better workers than the blacks in this history.) We see an earlier time when sims kidnap a pioneer child and the child's father's controversial but peaceful approach to getting his offspring back. And I won't spoil the surprise by telling anything about the other stories.
I loved this book; everything is so believable it makes you want to live in this friendly world, where docile Sim nannies watch your children and bring you cold lemonade in the hot summer sun!
Truly imaginative, this book makes you think about what it means to be human in a whole different light.
