The 1986 People Power Revolution is an important chapter in the history of the Philippines; it was a time when the Filipino people united—in thoughts, in words, and in deeds—to end a repressive regime and wage a peaceful and nonviolent campaign for liberation and justice. This is, of course, only one of the many facets of our narrative that demonstrates our love of country. With this chronicle by Elfren Sicangco Cruz and Neni Sta. Romana Cruz, both guiding lights in Philippine journalism and literature, I believe that the message of the EDSA Revolution and the characters behind its success will be conveyed to readers in a meaningful and objective way.
The Aquino Legacy: An Enduring Narrative is, indeed, a retrospective of the roles that my parents, the late Senator Benigno S. Aquino Jr. and the late President Corazon C. Aquino, played in our collective quest for freedom and democracy. It serves as a reliable source of information for Filipinos belonging to the millennial generation who may not be aware of how dire conditions were at the time and how we have, since then, moved forward as a people. It is an instrument for deepening their understanding of the Philippines—our history and our transformation from a land fettered by oppression, fear, and cruelty to a free nation empowered by a dynamic, resilient, and dignified citizenry.
It is always humbling to be mentioned in the same breath as my parents, whose legacy of faith, integrity, and equality I have sought to integrate in government. I do not bear this responsibility alone: My sisters, Ballsy, Pinky, Viel, and Kris, alongside the rest of the Filipino people, share my commitment to do great things for our nation.
People Power is defined by citizen engagement, social responsibility, and discerning involvement I am hopeful that this publication will inspire more of our countrymen to contribute to our society, advance the welfare of our fellowmen, sustain the gains of our reforms, and uphold our Republic’s revived distinction on the global stage. Let us be each other’s moral compass as we stay the course along the Daang Matuwid.
