- Synopsis
- In one of his essays Robert Louis Stevenson asks why Scotsmen of all kinds feel themselves to be different from their English neighbours. Highlanders and Lowlanders, with all their diversity of race, history and experience, speak in a babel of Gaelic, several varieties of Scots, and English; yet they all speak with what he calls 'a strong Scotch accent of the mind'. The reasons for this he attributes mainly to the cultural institutions of our country, and in particular to the distinctive character of the Scottish kirk, of Scots law, and of the Scottish educational system.
