- Synopsis
- Here are five timeless Christmas stories from which many women learned or reinforced their values for decades after they were published in 1925. The author emphasizes that money doesn't ensure merry Christmases in a story about a mother who anchor's her daughter's and husband's love with her imaginative ability to see the bright side and make much of little things. All she can afford for Christmas is a meat pie, but she excites her daughter by telling her that the onions will be silver and the carrots will be gold. The poor little family awaken the Christmas spirit in a lonely little rich boy with their playfulness and willingness to shower him with attention and praise. In, The Red Candle, a penniless man disappointed by life, uses old connections to surprise a needy family with more delights than they could imagine. One of the thieves who stole at Christmas finds both a way to repay his debt and begin a new life with a new love, all on a Christmas day. In The Holly Hedge, a hard-working woman leaves her ne'er-do-well husband when he destroys something she has always loved, to punish her for disobedience. On Christmas Eve he learns both self-respect and respect for his broken-hearted wife. These stories are echoes of earlier times and ways of life, times when couples ran general stores and children had so few toys that one toy from Santa at Christmas meant the world to them.
