- Synopsis
- [from the back cover] At first, there were only a few birds. Marcus and his mother thought they were beautiful. Then more birds came. Now the trees are filled with the fat blackbirds--hundreds, maybe thousands of them outside the house--nesting and eating the corn and no way to escape their foulness. Marcus's dad says those birds are going to kill the corn; there will be nothing to eat. Marcus doesn't know what to think--the birds are beautiful, so dark and intense, but he hates them, too! He hates their smell and the way they wait and watch his family. He hates them for making his mom and dad fight. He can't stand to hear his mother cry every time his dad shoots one. Now Marcus is stuttering again and somehow everything's his fault. If only the birds would go away. But then Flit, the health inspector, devises a gruesome plan to kill all the birds. Marcus is afraid the plan will break up his family for good. Why are the birds doing this to them?"
