This is an intriguing walk with Jesus during the last week before the crucifixion. At times the writing makes one feel as if he were with Jesus in Pilate’s hall or the garden of Gethsemane. Vivid descriptions of sitting in an actual tomb and walking up the Via Delarosa give insight to what it must have been like for Jesus and the disciples. Stories illustrate the God-strength and humanity of Jesus. Strong parallels between the week’s events are linked with our behavior in the modern church. Perhaps this is one of the bluntest books I have read by Max Lucardo as the superficial glitz of the modern church is exposed. However, his wit in story telling gives the book an upbeat and at times humorous look in to our own behavior and beliefs. He encourages the church to return to the calling of Jesus to seek out those whom the world ignores. The questions and scripture readings at the end of the book are good for Bible study, review of the books contents, or just self reflection. I found myself reading parts of this book more than once because of the delightful way the stories were written. They were entertaining while drawing the reader into a deeper contemplation of the ministry of Jesus.
