- Synopsis
- Nanos discusses the historical, cultural, background of Paul's Letter to the Romans. He argues that Paul, even though, he accepted Jesus, retained his Jewish identity. The book is one of the few that takes seriously Paul's Jewish identity and the psychological, social, cultural, and theological issues involved with his related to gentiles. According to Nanos, Paul's letter addressed a predominately Christian gentile audience and was written to help them adjust to their larger Jewish surroundings. The book offers an alternative meaning of Romans which is not generally discussed by many writers. Nanos includes such topics: The historical background and implied audience; The distinction between the weak and the strong; and the restoration of Israel in terms of both Jewish and Christian escatology.
