- Synopsis
- Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop was the richest woman in the Hawaiian kingdom in the late 19th century. Upon her death in 1884, her will set up a trust, known as the Bishop Estate, to be managed by 5 trustees, in order to create and maintain an institution, called the Kamehameha Schools, that would benefit the children of Hawai'i. In 1995 the Wall Street Journal called Bishop Trust the nation's wealthiest charity, with an endowment estimated at $10 billion. This book is a detailed account of the way late 20th-century trustees used the trust to benefit themselves, their friends and cronies. Corruption extended to judges, legislators, and lawyers. The early chapters relate the more recent history of Hawai'i and aspects of the Hawaiian character that are interesting. I did nothing with the Index. I think it's usable, but if you need it fixed let me know and I'll get the book and fix it. Cindy popularplace@yahoo.com
