- Synopsis
- When Rose Clennell gave up her baby son John she was a young unmarried woman. Now, twelve years later, when the child's father is dead, John's grandfather invites her to stay at his large country house. Colonel Fawcus is a kindly man, as long as everyone does exactly what he wishes, and he has an eye for the attractive Rose. John's young tutor, Michael Brighouse, also falls in love with her. Rose finds that she cannot help loving her twelve-year-old son, a sensitive and lonely boy, and she longs to save him from the despotic Colonel, whose egoism borders on insanity. She also has to deal with the colonel's spinster daughter janet, who hates and resents Rose. Help comes unexpectedly from a rather disreputable ministe, named Rackstraw, as Rose discovers that the colonel will let her stay near John only if she raises the boy as his grandfather wishes, and if she becomes the colonel's mistress. Can Rose count on her friends, win over her enemies, and rescue her son? The story unfolds in this intriguing, delightful book set in the English countryside.
