Synopsis
Anne Oldfield's life spanned the end of the 17th century to the beginning of the 18th century. This book covers her roles and her relationships with various colleagues, playwrights and rivals. Also, because she loved and became mistress of a member of the nobility who was a writer and heavily involved with the politics of the time, there is almost more coverage of the politics of the time during the reigns of William (after the so-called Glorious Rebellion when William and Mary replaced James II who had abdicated and fled to France, Queen Anne, his Successor, the last of the Stuart rulers and George I, who succeeded Anne and was the first of the Hanoverian rulers. There were also wars going on at the time: The War of the Spanish Succession, and this affected people with whom Anne, because of her relationship with her lover and the father of her son, Arthur Waynwaring. Lovely Wanton review: This is a wonderful, well-written book, one of my all-time favorites. It's a biography and a love story with lot of English history of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. This is a book with which I became totally emotionally involved. There are so many characters besides the main one, Anne Oldfield, with whom one can empathize.
