Synopsis
This story of three generations of two families and their interrelationships is set partly in New Orleans and partly at a plantation on a bayou in a different parish. The time period covered is from Nov. 1890 to winter of 1941-1942, and the history and culture and mores of the time period are well drawn. There is a fair amount of Negro dialect and a small amount of profanity.

Despite the somewhat old-fashioned style of writing and quaint vocabulary, the sensitive reader will become involved with the characters. Part II left me saddened and with a lump in my throat that lasted all the way through Part III. I found the dialogue annoying awkward in some sections; perhaps they talked that way in that time and place, but I doubt it. In other sections the dialogue seemed more natural.The romantic story and the historical and political presentations made reading the novel enjoyable, but it wasn't as good as I'd expected.
