- Synopsis
- Eddie wisely predicts "tail trouble" when he sees the extra- long tail on Sidney's monkey costume. Best friends Penny and Patsy fool everyone at the party with their twin bear costumes. But can they fool their moms? Eddie gets a very special Halloween treat when a penny he's collected turns out to be worth a whole lot more. Eddie, Star, and Lillybell are too young to be invited to Billy Porter's party. So they come up with a "ghostly" surprise for the big kids. A child fears her neighbor has eaten her cat and hung its skin out to dry. Two policemen plan a Halloween surprise for the neighborhood children. A group of children jam a man's doorbell because he doesn't have treats for them and then need his help. A boy gets a new kitten named Jackie on Halloween. A little girl changes from a dancer to a witch and back in to a dancer. In these nine short stories, readers will share some very happy Halloweens with the Haywood gang. They will learn about Halloween in the middle of the twentieth century when children went door to door trick or treating by themselves, when the sight of themselves in their costumes scared them silly, when it was OK to get a ride on a motorcycle from a neighbor, when kids bought things from Ten Cent Stores, they new the policemen's names, and said jeepers when they were excited.
