- Synopsis
- Hewn out of the rocks, this has the making of a folk tale of today. A sturdy portrait of an island community, off the coast of Maine, a group of people held together by traditions and loyalty and the difficulty of survival once the only native industry goes by default, and a feud, started with a small incident and growing to proportions that split families and friends asunder,- such is the material of which this story is built. The telling is episodic, so much so that at times one feels there is a good deal of unfinished business. But one gets to know the people, -- the Gilmans, the MacGimseys -- descended from the first residents; Miss Greenwood, still considered a summer resident- after twenty years, and ""queer"" because of her looks, her independence, her different attitude to the wild creatures she grew to know in her lonely house built on a remote fastness; Stella, postmistress and storekeeper, who battened on gossip, much of it malicious, and played personalities against each other; and other village residents. And the feel of place and mood pervade the whole.... will carry this beyond her usual substantial sale among those who like staunch regional stories.
