Set in World War II, this novel is about 2 men divided by class and experience but sharing a mutual respect and empathy. One is Lieutenant Billy Prior, and the other is his doctor, Dr. William Rivers, who cured him of shell shock. Billy is determined to return to France while Dr. Rivers is consumed by the medical challenge and moral dilemma of restoring men to health so that they can be sent back to the battlegrounds and almost certain death.
