- Synopsis
- SPEAK SOFTLY On December 15, 1895, Theodore Roosevelt, future Governor of New York State, Rough Rider in the Spanish-American War, and twenty-sixth President of the United States, had been Police Commissioner, the City of New York, President of the Police Department's Board, seven months, nine days. Readers of the city's twenty- eight dailies, yellow and otherwise, could hardly wait to find out what was going to happen next. When The Big Stick, Lawrence Alexander's first Theodore Roosevelt Mystery, debuted in 1986, Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine praised it as "a lot of fun and a jolly good idea." Now, in this newest installment, we return once again to Gay Nineties New York to meet up with our supersleuth hero, T.R. This time out, Teddy's called in to investigate a series of signature murders linked to organized crime and narcotics smuggling-a colorful case that turns into an intriguing but deadly family affair. When young cousin Franklin Delano Roosevelt receives a warning from the sinister "Black Hand" killers tying him to the crimes, the swashbuckling Police Commissioner springs into action. He discovers two important facts: first, the dead men were all members of Russell and Company, operating out of Canton, China; and second, F.D.R.'s grandfather Warren Delano was part of the group. With all those connected to the company now potential victims, Teddy gathers them together at his Sagamore Hill home for safekeeping-and finding the key link between this motley crew and the killings isn't going to be an easy task. It is only a matter of time before the Black Hand strikes again. Given a climactic submarine chase in New York harbor and a cast glittering with luminaries of the day, SPEAK SOFTLY is a delightful fictional creation, magically capturing the life and times of a legendary character.
