Melanin, a 13-year-old African-American boy, hangs out with his friends, plays basketball, enjoys writing, collects stamps, likes reading about endangered animals, and even has a crush on a girl named Angie. Melanin has never known his father, but he has a very close relationship with his mother and he enjoys the time the two of them spend together.
But one night Melanin's mother brings home someone special that she wants her son to meet. It turns out that Melanin's mother is in love, but she is in love with another woman! Not just any woman... but a white woman. Melanin is shocked and hurt and worried about what others will think. Will he ever forgive his mother?
