- Synopsis
- Cupping his hand to his mouth, he shouted, "Mr. Beckett! My father has gone overboard! Look at your starboard bow!" "I can't see him," Aaron muttered. Matt bit his lip. "Mr. Beckett! My father's overboard!" Matt jabbed his finger desperately as Beckett looked up. Matt knew Beckett must have heard him, but Charity was sailing on. She was right on the spot now where Matt thought his father was. Beckett was looking overboard, but even Matt now could see nothing in the water. Fathom was closing fast with Charity. "He's gone," Aaron said. Matt felt a lump of desperation in his throat. Charity's sails were billowing across Fathom's bows; she had not moved a degree off course. Matt was forced to give way and as he pushed the helm down he passed within feet of Charity's skipper. Beckett said nothing. He was staring ahead, his face expressionless. As Fathom's bows cleaved the froth of Charity's wake Matt realized simultaneously two incredible truths: His father was drowned and Beckett hadn't lifted a finger to help him.
