Read this as a teenager and loved it. Read it twenty years and loved it. Suspenseful and full of humor, romance, and friendship. Rudolph Rassendyll has a vague notion that he is distantly related to the Elfbergs, royal family of Ruritania. He takes a trip there, goes hunting in the countryside one afternoon, and happens upon a cottage with several hearty fellows are celebrating the imminent marriage of Rudolph Elfberg, who is to be crowned king the next day. Only, the king-to-be has a little too much to drink and is in no condition to don any purple robes in the morning. Rassendyll, who resembles him, jumps into the breech and plays the role of prince Rudolph. His intention is to hand over duties, throne, and bride to the rightful king and go back to England. Meanwhile, others have visited the cottage and spirited the king away. The play-acting must continue until the king can be found and brought back to the castle. Rudolph excels as king and falls in love with the intended bride, Flavia who returns his love, delighted with the change in what used to be a fatuous young man she could barely suffer in her presence. A young gallant, Rupert Hentzau, sees through the plot and is planning to expose Rudolph and the men who saved the coronation.
