- Synopsis
- This book is intended to provide a framework to organize a large volume of archeological data and to provide a foundation for future research and interpretations. It attempts to articulate archeological information between adjacent regions of western North America. To keep the book readable and useful, it has been necessary to select information that illustrates the defining characteristics of archeological traditions and complexes. Consequently, much information about individual sites has been excluded, and many sites have not been discussed or even cited. These omissions are not intended to diminish the significant excavations and analyses of the many excellent archeologists whose work has contributed to our understanding of the early archeology of western North America. To avoid possible inaccurate conversions of 14C determinations to calendar years and make this work correspond to the large body of extant literature, the 14C determinations have been left uncalibrated in this presentation. Many scientists have reservations about the accuracy of the calibration curve beginning about 10,000 14C years b.p., the time period that is the focus of this book. During this time it becomes impossible to rely on the annual growth cycles recorded in tree rings and consequently it is necessary to use other less reliable organisms for calibration. Furthermore, the vast majority of the literature contains dates which are not calibrated. The radiocarbon dates are reported as they appear in the literature or as they have been reported by radiocarbon dating laboratories. They are presented first by the date, followed by the statistical error of the measurement and laboratory numbers when possible.
