- Synopsis
- From the book jacket: Day after day Danza lived on. He lay limp and hopeless in his pen while Paulo sat beside him. The fever subsided but left a burned-out digestive and nervous system. Danza was too weak to stand, but even if he had had the strength, his feet would not have borne his weight. Paulo flung himself down along Danza's back, his arm around the horse's neck, his face buried in the wealth of mane that fanned out on the ground. He cried, hoping desperately that Grandfather wouldn't see him, but unable to stop. "I killed Danza and he's the only thing in the world that loves me. That I love. And Grandfather knows I did it. All these years he's never liked me or trusted me, and he was right. How could I ever grow up to be a horseman, his partner, if I could do something like this to a horse I love so much?" This is the story of a sensitive Puerto Rican boy, his relationship with his powerful grandfather, and with Major Kessler, an American who helps make it possible for Danza to recover from his near-fatal illness. But most of all it is the story of the magnificent Paso Fino stallion Danza, a horse of great heart, and of how Paulo comes, finally, to be deserving of him. LYNN HALL, at the age of seven, ran away from home to try to join a pony-ride concession. Her spare time during her pre-teen and teen years was spent cleaning stalls at a local riding stable in hopes of earning an occasional ride. As an adult, her love for horses is still strong, as is obvious to the readers of her books. Miss Hall lives in the scenic hill country near Elkader, Iowa, in a stone cottage she built primarily by herself. Her immediate family comprises three English cocker spaniels, a collie, and four Paso Fino horses. The story of Danza! grew out of Miss Hall's love for Paso Finos, a breed just beginning to make an impact on horse lovers in America.
