- Synopsis
- "If you don't live dangerously, you are simply -not living at all," declares Lydia, the irrepressible heroine of this sparkling coming-of-a-certain-age story about a widow's adventures in retirement. The story begins when Lydia decides that the cure for the doldrums is to trade in Miss Swanson (her solid dark-green Buick) for a yellow two-seater convertible, change her hair to a "discreet" blonde, and go West. Before long, she finds herself in the fictional (but very familiar) community of Los Barcos--a town filled with citizens of that certain age, revealing their eccentricities and their zest for life, Southern California style. Ready for romance but reluctant to brave a singles bar, Lydia attends a Sunday morning birdwalk and there, wearing Animal World sneakers, is the man of her dreams, Herm. The Lydia Chronicles brings us a whole banquet of love the second time around as this spirited couple decides on an LTA ("Living Together Arrangement") and lets us into their world. We meet their friends and acquaintances: Poppy, a lonely widow reluctant to date a man unless there are "sparks" ("Sparks!" says Lydia. "You want the moon with maple syrup on it."); Mrs. Meticulous and the Gray Woman; Fred Tucker, the gas station proprietor who enjoys lectures on the digestive system; and other quirky characters. We also meet intriguing neighbors with various hidden agendas--and, in one case, nude potters in the garage. And we follow Lydia as she goes to experimental poetry readings, irons out her troubles with Herm, and makes plain that age is no deterrent to the pursuit of happiness. Each new chapter in the Chronicles is another step on a blithe journey filled with unexpected twists and more than a few revelations. Witty, heartwarming, and slyly satirical, The Lydia Chronicles offers proof positive that life begins at sixty-five.
