This book contains the accounts of four Titanic survivors, namely Lawrence Beesley, Colonel Gracie, Harold Bride and Charles Lightoller. All were originally written in 1912, except Lightoller's story, which dates from 1935.Gracie's book is not complete, as he died during the last stages of writing it. This edition omits a final chapter added by an editor. However, the essentials are all there. While valuable sources, the four stories should be checked against other sources. None are infallible, especially the work of Harold Bride, who is one of the more unreliable witnesses to the disaster. It is difficult to determine the extent to which it was ghost-written by a New York Times reporter.Overall, it's easily the cheapest and easiest way to obtain these important texts. Just keep a supply of salt and a sceptical eye handy.<p> Dave Gittins.Author of Titanic: Monument and Warning. The new and authoritative e-book.
