Synopsis

This book tries to equip the manager with the understanding, the thinking, the knowledge, and the skills for today's and also tomorrow's job. In this book, there is equal stress on the manager's tasks and on his character. This book and its approach have been developed and tested in more than thirty years of teaching management to many different kinds of students in colleges, universities, and executive programmes and seminars. But the subject matter of the book itself has largely been developed out of nearly forty years of working closely with managers on all levels as a consultant, with managers in large and small businesses, and with managers in government agencies, in hospitals and in schools. Most of this experience has been in America, and with American businesses and public service institutions-although I have worked also with managements of businesses and nonbusinesses alike outside the United States, especially in Great Britain, Western Europe, Japan, and Latin America. The book therefore tries to include what every manager needs to know-but in a form in which it is also accessible to people who themselves have not yet worked as managers or even as employees in managed institutions. The user of this book can therefore be sure of two things: everything in the book has been developed in management practice and found both effective in it and central to it; and everything has been tested by students of management and found to be meaningful to them, as well as easily accessible.
