So many of us who read "Marley and Me", (now a box office hit movie), didn't have a clue about the author and his family. In this memoir, we are treated to a history that is alternately painful and courageous. Raised by devoutly Catholic parents, we learn that they shunned John's wife because she was not Catholic. His parents provided no support of any kind to the young couple or their growing family. Reading the memoir is a piece of literature in its own right, but then adding it to the story of "Marley and Me" intensifies the latter. A further re-read of "Marley and Me" now makes more sense and increases my respect for this couple's family courage. It also at last makes understandable the (silly?) decision to keep their hellion of a dog regardless of his insane behavior.
