A Line in the Sand
- Synopsis
-
This timely volume on the political history of the Middle East examines the division of Arab lands by France and Britain in the wake of the First World War, and explores the effects of conflicts and competition between the imperial powers on the development of the modern political landscape of the region. The work is divided into four chronological sections covering the period of division from 1915 to 1919, the courting and suppression of local powers in the inter-war years, proxy battles and direct conflict during World War II, and post war deals and roots of the ongoing Israel-Palestine problem. The author draws on newly released archival documents and includes a selection of black and white plates. Barr is a journalist and the author of Setting the Desert on Fire, a history of Lawrence of Arabia. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc. , Portland, OR (booknews. com)
