Though Leslie focuses mainly on how she teaches calm behavior within the context of her agility classes, any experienced dog owner can adapt these techniques for a pet, service dog or rescue canine. My guide dog used to bound out of his crate looking for something to sniff and then race madly around. After reading her book, I easily taught him to lie quietly in the crate with the door open. Then I taught him to step out, turn to me and heel calmly while we walked away from the crate. As long as your dog gets a chance to romp vigorously, there's no need to have him constantly amped up, especially when it's time to work. I can't recommend this book enough; next to Jean Donaldson's "Culture Clash" it's my absolute favorite book for learning to be an excellent handler.
