Obtaining a service dog, particularly a guide dog, is one of the deepest yet most dichotomous bonds on earth. There are the love and joy, the laughter and tears, the triumphs and even the frustrating days. Things are imperfect, humorous, or so deeply touching that all you want to do is thank your dog over and over again for getting you out of that tough situation or even for saving your life. In TWO PLUS FOUR EQUALS ONE, Kathy Nimmer explores every aspect of this relationship with the help of many experienced service-dog users. Each story or poem provides a different angle on this friendship. Present are not only accounts of guide dogs, but also of service dogs used for people with mobility-related disabilities. Perhaps the most touching are descriptions of dogs used in helping people with mental illnesses to cope. This is an outstanding book, whether you use a service dog or enjoy discovering more about them. As a new guide-dog handler, I found the warmth and compassion of this book deeply touching. It helped me through some very difficult times and actually enabled me to continue more quickly with the bonding process.
