The Great Arab Conquests
- Synopsis
-
In the time between the death of Mohammed in 632 and the fall of the Umayyad Caliphate in 750, Arab armies conquered most of the old roman and Persian Empires. Kennedy (medieval history, University of St. Andrews) explains how this happened. Told in a lively, interesting style, he uses Arabic primary sources and those of the peoples they overwhelmed to give a clear, unbiased account. Kennedy discusses the way in which a few Arabs managed to impose their religion and, with the exception of Persia, their language on established civilizations. This is an excellent book for the general reader. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc. , Portland, OR (booknews. com)
